landLAB was hired by the University of California, San Diego to design an interim pedestrian plaza at the heart of the existing campus adjacent to the Price Center Student Union. The first phase of the project will close vehicular traffic to Myers Loop, enhancing a major east -west pedestrian connection, thus minimizing pedestrian/vehicular conflicts. The new areas created by the road closure provide for flexible event space for large public gatherings and daily farmers markets, while the installation of outdoor tables and chairs creates a dynamic student social space at this prominent campus node. The existing grass median with mature trees and Stuart Collection public art will remain in the interim condition. Phase II of the “parking lot decommissioning” (not yet realized) focuses on sustainable design features including bio-retention areas filled with native plant material cut out of the existing parking to clean and filter the storm water.
